History

Alamosa was founded in 1878 when nearly 100 buildings were unloaded from rail cars in the span of one day. The Denver and Rio Grande Railway laid rails in all four directions, making Alamosa the hub of the San Luis Valley.  Long before its railroad days, the valley was home to ancient cultures and indigenous tribes. We invite you to explore this rich history that continues to shape the Alamosa community today.

The historic Alamosa Train Depot now houses the Colorado Welcome Center in Alamosa. Here, you can see railroad artifacts from years past, catch a glimpse of active rail cars, and learn about all the things Alamosa has to offer today. Speak with our awesome team of volunteer travel counselors for the best tips and tricks to make the most of your vacation. Our hours are 9am-5pm, 7 days a week
