It’s no secret that we love our local National Park, so we figured why not give it the recognition it deserves? With “National Parks Week” slated for April 20-28, we figured we’d up the ante by extending this celebration through the entire month of April. Throughout the month, visitors can attend a new roster of special events, find free swag at the Welcome Center, and access vouchers to be used throughout Alamosa. As the gateway to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, we invite you to join in on the fun by exploring and experiencing all that the park has to offer.
Discover the Park
The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of Colorado’s four National Parks and is located conveniently near Alamosa in the Mystic San Luis Valley. The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America and its vast dune field covers more than 30 sq. miles! The park is further distinguished by its unique biological diversity, as visitors can explore wetlands, forests, tundra, and more ecosystems all within a single afternoon. April 5: Kick-Off Celebration at First Fridays
This special edition of First Fridays will be all about our favorite national park. Don’t miss a special presentation by Great Sand Dunes Park Ranger Patrick Myers at the San Luis Valley Museum
Stars Above the Sand 7:00PM: There are more stars than grains of sand! Through images and video, we’ll explore the unexpected wonders of the universe - from Great Sand Dunes, to other dunes in our solar system, to the first images of distant galaxies captured by the new James Webb Space Telescope. After the presentation, you can touch small pieces of our Moon and the planet Mars!
April 6: Share the Love Community Mural Project
Visit Alamosa invites you to Create a series of interactive Paint by Numbers murals during this free-open to all- event. The Share the Love event will be filled to the brim with artistic expression, kids activities, food trucks, and more! Each year the National Park Service celebrates everything "parks" for nine days in April. Discover what the National Park Service does through our programs and partners to preserve natural and cultural heritage and provide recreational opportunities in places across the country.

April 27-May 5: Youth Art Showcase Art Exhibit
Don't miss the Youth Art Showcase at the Colorado Welcome Center, featuring artwork submitted by our talented young artists. Experience the Great Sand Dunes through their unique perspectives and talents. Welcome Center Hours are 9AM-5M seven days a week.
